Maybe you've noticed your teeth look darker in photos, or whitening toothpaste hasn't made much difference. Coffee, tea, red wine, smoking and getting older can all change the colour of teeth over time. Our teeth whitening service in Bannockburn starts with a check of your teeth and gums, so you know which option suits you before anything begins. You're in the right place, close to home on High Street.
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental treatment that uses a bleaching gel to lighten the colour of natural teeth.
Common reasons people consider whitening:
Some colour sits on the surface of the tooth and can often be polished away (see stain removal below). Other colour sits deeper inside the tooth, and that is where whitening may help.
Products from the supermarket or online mostly work on surface stains, and gel that touches the gums can irritate them. That's why we check your teeth and gums first.
A single tooth that has turned grey or dark on its own is different. It can be a sign of an old knock or a problem inside the tooth. If one tooth has changed colour, it's a good idea to have it checked soon. Call and we'll find the earliest suitable time.
Every whitening plan starts with an examination. Your dentist looks at your teeth and gums, checks for decay, gum problems or worn fillings, and asks what shade you'd like. If anything needs treating first, we'll tell you and explain why.
Your dentist then explains the whitening options we offer and what each one costs, so you can compare them before you decide.
Which option suits you depends on your teeth, how sensitive they are, and how you'd like to fit treatment into your week. How much lighter your teeth become, and how long it lasts, depends on the cause of the colour and on habits such as coffee, tea and smoking. We'll talk this through honestly before you decide.
Whitening only lightens natural teeth. As healthdirect's guide to teeth whitening explains, it won't change the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings. So if a front tooth is chipped, has a small gap, or has an old filling that no longer matches, composite bonding for chips and small gaps may suit you better. Bonding is a tooth-coloured repair, sometimes called a cosmetic front-tooth or aesthetic filling. For bigger changes to the shape or colour of several front teeth, we can talk about whether veneers suit your front teeth. Some patients whiten first, then have any new bonding matched to their lighter shade.
Stain removal is a professional clean and polish that lifts surface stains caused by coffee, tea, wine and smoking. It doesn't bleach the tooth, so it only works on the outer surface.
At our clinic, stain removal is often done as part of a routine check-up and clean. Your clean is done by a dentist. For some people, removing surface stain is all they need. Others decide on whitening afterwards, once the surface is clean and their true shade is easier to see.
| Stain removal | Teeth whitening | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Cleans and polishes off surface stains | Lightens the colour of the tooth with a bleaching gel |
| Works on | The outer surface of natural teeth | Natural teeth only, not fillings, crowns or veneers |
| Often done with | A check-up and clean | A check of your teeth and gums first |
Not sure which one you need? Book a check-up and ask us. We'll show you what we see and explain how stain removal and whitening differ for your teeth.
For a little while after whitening, your dentist may suggest cutting back on coffee, tea, red wine and smoking, because these can stain teeth again. Regular check-ups and cleans help keep surface stains under control between treatments.
Many of our patients come from Bannockburn, Teesdale and Lethbridge, and we also see people from Inverleigh, Batesford, Shelford and Meredith. Having the clinic close by means you don't need to drive to Geelong for whitening.
We're open Monday to Friday 9am–6pm and Saturday 9am–1pm, closed Sunday. Saturday mornings help if you commute to Geelong or Melbourne during the week and find it hard to get time off.
Whitening isn't right for everyone. The Australian Dental Association's advice on teeth whitening notes that it isn't advised during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and sensitivity is a common side effect. If you have crowns, veneers or larger fillings on your front teeth, we'll explain how whitening could affect the way they match. Many of our patients are older, and fillings and crowns don't whiten, so we look at your whole mouth before suggesting whitening.
The clinic is on the ground floor with no steps, is wheelchair-accessible and pram-friendly, and has an accessible toilet. Parking is limited. Our team speaks English, Hindi, Gujarati and Urdu.
When you call (03) 4217 3810 or book online, we'll find a time that suits you, including Saturday mornings. At your first visit we check your teeth and gums and ask what you'd like to change. Then we explain your options and fees before we start.
The cost depends on the type of whitening and whether you need a clean or other treatment first. After your check-up we'll explain your options and what each one costs before any treatment starts. We accept all health funds and claim on the spot with HICAPS. Whether your fund pays anything towards whitening depends on your level of extras cover.
After whitening, some people notice their teeth feel sensitive for a day or two. If it lasts longer or something doesn't feel right, call us and we'll book you in to have a dentist check it.
