A back tooth may have cracked on something hard, or a filling may have grown so large that the tooth feels weak. You might have started chewing on the other side to protect it. Dental crowns in Bannockburn VIC are one way to deal with this: a crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers the visible part of the tooth to protect what is left. Crowns are among the dental clinic services from check-ups to crowns we provide on High Street, so you don't need to drive to Geelong for one.
When You Need Dental Crowns
A crown may be suggested when a tooth is too damaged for a filling alone. Common reasons include:
- a cracked or broken tooth;
- a large filling that leaves little tooth behind;
- a back tooth that has had a root canal to treat an infected nerve, which can leave it more likely to break (see healthdirect's guide to root canal treatment);
- teeth worn down by grinding or clenching;
- supporting a bridge held in place by crowns over a gap.
A cracked tooth may hurt when you bite or twinge with cold. Many dental problems are simpler to treat when they're found early. If a tooth hurts when you bite, it's a good idea to have it checked soon. Call and we'll find the earliest suitable time. A crown isn't always the answer: our page on when a filling may be enough explains the smaller repair.
Our Dental Crowns Process
Here's what usually happens:
- Check. Your dentist examines the tooth, takes an X-ray if needed, and explains whether a crown, a filling or another option suits it, with the fee for each.
- Prepare. The tooth is numbed and shaped so the crown can fit over it. Shaping removes some of the outer tooth, so it can't be undone.
- Measure. The shaped tooth is measured so the crown is made to fit your bite, and a temporary cap may protect it in between.
- Fit. Your dentist checks the fit, colour and bite, then cements the crown in place.
Afterwards the tooth can feel sensitive, or your bite slightly different, for a short time. If it doesn't settle, call us and we'll book you in to have a dentist check it.
Dental Crowns Cost in Bannockburn
The cost of a dental crown depends on the material, how much work the tooth needs first (such as rebuilding it or root canal treatment), the number of visits and lab work, and your health fund cover. After your check-up we'll explain your options and what each one costs before any treatment starts. We accept all health funds and claim on the spot with HICAPS, and we also accept DVA Gold and White Cards. What your fund pays back depends on your level of cover. Common Questions About Dental Crowns in Bannockburn
Our FAQ page has more questions about crowns and caps.
Do I need a crown or a filling for a cracked tooth in Bannockburn?
Whether a cracked tooth needs a crown or a filling depends on how much of the tooth is left and where the crack runs. A small chip can often be repaired with a filling, while a large crack or a big old filling may need a crown to cover and protect the tooth. At our Bannockburn clinic, your dentist checks the tooth first and explains both options. Read about choosing a filling over a crown.
How many visits does a dental crown take in Bannockburn?
How many visits a dental crown takes depends on the tooth and on how the crown is made, and your dentist will tell you before you start. At our Bannockburn clinic you can book Monday to Friday 9am–6pm or Saturday 9am–1pm. If you're new to us, read about forms and details for new patients.
What are crowns made of at a Bannockburn dentist?
Crowns can be made from porcelain or other ceramics, from metal, or from porcelain joined to metal. Each material differs in strength, look and how much tooth needs shaping, so the right choice depends on where the tooth sits and how you bite. Your Bannockburn dentist explains the materials we offer and the fee for each before you decide. For front teeth, see how a veneer differs from a crown.
How long will a crown from a Bannockburn dentist last?
How long a crown lasts depends on the material, how much natural tooth is left, your bite, whether you grind your teeth and how well you clean around it. A crowned tooth can still decay at the edge of the crown, and a crown can chip or come loose. Your Bannockburn dentist can check it at each visit, so read about checking your crowns at a routine visit.
How much does a dental crown cost in Bannockburn?
The cost of a dental crown in Bannockburn depends on the material, whether the tooth needs work first, such as rebuilding or root canal treatment, and your health fund cover. After your check-up we'll explain your options and what each one costs before any treatment starts. We accept all health funds and claim on the spot with HICAPS. Read about claiming a crown on your health fund.
What should I do if my crown comes off in Bannockburn?
If your crown comes off, keep it somewhere safe and call our Bannockburn clinic during opening hours. We fit emergency patients in between booked appointments wherever we can. Don't try to glue the crown back yourself, and avoid chewing on that side until a dentist has checked the tooth. Read about urgent help when a crown comes loose.
